‘Abstract to Abstraction’

Town Mill, Lyme Regis 2004

This exhibition by a painter, Gail Sagman and a photographer, Katia Marsh, was created around the subject of Abstract v. Abstraction.

Both explore line and plane, tone and texture, to produce a composition of rhythm and space that is determined (on the whole) by the rectangle.

The paintings have evolved without any reference to the physical world, but via a response to the canvas and each simultaneous mark placed on it, thereby producing an abstract image.

The photographs however are fragments from the physical world, the scale and framing of which often render them unidentifiable. The object is lost, and an abstracted image is produced.
